There have been many material and technological advancements over the past 5000 years.
Starting with the Pyramids of Giza, 5000 years of construction and civil engineering has included the creation of community housing, making use of materials at hand, innovations for skeleton of structures, different cultures interacting, and strategically laying roads and bridges.

Four Major Construction Materials That Form the Backbone of Buildings

Of the four major construction materials, stone is the oldest, represented by the Pyramids of Giza built over 5000 years ago. About 1500 years ago, wood was proudly used as a building material at the Shosoin Imperial Repository. 250 years ago, iron was used to build an iron bridge. About 160 years ago, modern concrete was invented.

 

Basic form of building materials

Basic construction materials can be divided into three functions: hardening materials, surface materials, and wiring materials. Spatial structures arise from how these materials are implemented.
Let’s examine the lifespan of historical buildings. Compared to the Pyramids of Giza, which were erected about 5000 years ago using masonry, the Shosoin made from wood has only been in existence for about 1250 years so far. Both types of construction incorporate materials that are almost unaltered from their natural state. From this, it can be seen that masonry is a valid method of achieving long-lasting construction.

It is rare to find iron structures over 250 years old, concrete structures over 100 years old. Reinforced concrete was developed to make use of the advantages of both concrete and steel, but also includes their disadvantages as well.
Reinforced concrete has been widely used for over 100 years as a major building material because of its excellent performance. However, while it is a versatile construction material, it also inherits the disadvantages of concrete and steel as well. Reinforced concrete is likely to deteriorate because of these disadvantages.
